Fashion in the name of culture has landed local designer Laduma Ngxokolo the number one spot at Vogue's “Scouting for Africa” talent competition.
The international scouting project profiled 10 African designers to get an opportunity to showcase their garments at the Palazzo Morando in Milan, Italy, in September - plus an opportunity to appear in Vogue Italia.
Ngxokolo came out tops, and said he'd showcase his new summer collection at the fashion show.
“Ndinemicili (ecstatic), I feel honoured and blessed to be chosen amongst the best African designers,” he said yesterday [THURSDAY].
He said the opportunity would see him help put South African fashion on a world map.
Last year the 27-year-old designer moved to London, a week after he presented his collection Camagu (a Xhosa term suggesting activities associated with ancestors, and meaning “thank you”) at Africa Fashion Week, to take up a scholarship at the Central St Martins University.
The Nelson Mandela University of Technology alum said even though he won the competition, his work is still in the introductory phase. “
Hat designer Simon and Mary and jewellery designer Katherine Pichulik were the other South Africans who were part of the 10 designers.
