New dictionaries for marginalised languages
A spate of new dictionaries is set to be published from now until mid-December. The Department of Arts and Culture on Monday announced various initiatives to promote South Africa’s 11 official languages‚ especially those that have been relatively marginalised.Deputy Minister of Arts and Culture Rejoice Mabudafhasi has taken steps to resuscitate the 11 National lexicography Units for each language been a prime mover in getting mono-lingual and bi-lingual dictionaries compiled and published‚ according to the department.The department pointed to a string of recent and forthcoming events related to languages. International Translation Day fell on 30 September‚ while International Dictionary Day fell on 16 October.“The year 2015 marks the 20th anniversary of the PanSALB Act which saw the establishment of the Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB)‚” the department said.The nine indigenous language Units have recently agreed to an overarching structure – The South African National Lexicography Units.Between now and mid-December about thirteen “new or revised editions of indigenous language monolingual‚ and English-indigenous language bilingual dictionaries will be published. A further two dictionaries will be available early in 2016.”..
