Alice Walker in SA to honour Steve Biko
South African fans of novelist and activist, Alice Walker, will get a chance to spend an evening with her as she honours Steve Biko.
The poet, short-story writer, essayist, anthologist, teacher and editor has long been a force for sanity in a chaotic world. She will be in South Africa for the first time to deliver the 11th annual Steve Biko Memorial Lecture at the University of Cape Town on September 9th.
She will also be part of a gathering called ‘An Evening With Alice Walker’ taking place at the State Theatre in Pretoria on September 7th.
The family of the late Steve Biko will also be in attendance at the State Theatre event which is designed to celebrate the life and legacy of Bantu Stephen Biko
“The Steve Biko Memorial Lecture is an opportunity to explore the inextricable link between the individual and society; to explore triumphs over inequality; and to speak to contemporary challenges and opportunities facing people of African descent,” says Obenewa Amponsah, Director Fundraising & International Partnerships.
Joining Walker on stage will be Simphiwe Dana and several other notable home-grown talents.
Walker draws on her deep spiritual grounding, her political conviction and experience, and her literary gifts to offer wisdom and encouragement.
Tickets to this once-off event at the State Theatre range between R150 and R200.
With just one show planned it is advisable to book now to experience an individual whose writings – including ‘The Color Purple’ – have been translated into more than two dozen languages.
