Love my Deli with Marisa Evans of Vovo Telo
Where is the deli?
No 44 Stanley in Auckland, Johannesburg.
Tell us about its name.
We were in Madagascar at a hotel called Vovo Telo and when we saw a guy on a 1920s bicycle ride past with baguettes stacked at the back. It was then that the name was born.
What do you sell?
We sell freshly made baguettes, pastries, muffins and cakes, and coffee drinks.
Describe your shop in a sentence.
Love; bread; coffee. It's about the love of good bread and coffee.
Who are your customers?
People who have a passion for food and appreciate the production of great products.
What did you do before this?
I studied medicine . My partner studied mechanical engineering.
What brought about the idea of Vovo Telo?
We fell in love with the idea of the lifestyle while watching the movie "Chocolat" - the notion of a corner shop that sells fresh baked bread daily.
Why do you think people love your shop?
They enjoy the vibe - it's cool. Also we have bakers in the store and everyone gets to see their bread being made. Our ingredients are simple - there are no preservatives, it's just flour, yeast and water.
What kind of music do you play there?
It's often classical lounge; and always chilled.
How long has Vovo Telo been open?
The shop is four months old, but we have a branch in Port Elizabeth that was opened three years ago.
People liked our shop in Port Elizabeth and we thought there was nothing really like it in Joburg, so we decided to give it a shot.
