Indescribable: It's Easy to Keep a Bad Secret, chronicles Candice Derman's abuse by her stepfather. I've always looked at this actress in Backstage and Scandal and thought how beautiful and lucky she is, what a lovely family she has.
This book reveals the incredible horror behind this seemingly charmed existence. We have almost become immune to child abuse in South Africa but this is one of the most powerful books I've read in a long time. It takes place between the ages of eight and 15 and in each year she writes in the voice of a child that age.
We read this graphic story of abuse, but at the same time, mixed in with this horror, she reminds us what it's like to be a child. It's so moving, so horrifying that at times you can't breathe. But it is so well written that it goes beyond its genre. And the ending is redemptive; she talks about how she finally knows that she loves her husband more than she hates her stepfather.
It's really a tale of triumph.
