PILLOWTALK: Crime writer Roger Smith

Audrey Nyathi | 27 September, 2011 00:07

What are you reading?

The Killer Is Dying by James Sallis.

In a nutshell?

A sparse, noir tale of a sick and slowly dying hitman, the homicide police officer trying to run him to ground and a resourceful teenager who is carving out an improbable life after both parents abandon him.

Why read it?

James Sallis, sadly not very well-known in South Africa, is one of the finest prose stylists in contemporary fiction. Crime fans will love it, and those who dismiss crime fiction as trash will be converts.

  • Smith's book 'Dust Devils' is published by Serpent's Tail, R160
