Iconic Vespa is still the king of cool

By DENNIS TAU | 05 May, 2011 21:38
MODERN CLASSICS: The latest Vespas, which range from 125cc to 300cc, look much like the classic Italian scooters of old but now have clean four-stroke single-cylinder power and automatic transmission

It recently occurred to me that being cool is complicated. If you had sideburns or a moustache back in the eighties you were cool. But times have changed.

If you were to continue wearing bootleg pants and high-collared shirts over the jacket in 2010, you probably wouldn't be considered cool.

You'd probably be considered what is commonly known as "old school".

The message here is simple - in order to continue being at the peak of coolness, one needs to continually be aware of the changing state of cool.

Hell, even the word cool goes in and out of being cool. Nowadays it's all about being phresh - pronounced fresh!

There is something that surmounts this problem. It's called a Vespa - which means wasp in Italian.

Think about it. Now I know - believe me I do - that scooters aren't considered the coolest things in the world.

But the Italian Vespa has been cool for an awfully long time and this can be attributed to it's styling, elegance and beauty which has made it an icon.

They don't look all that different nowadays and pretty much do the same job.

Provided you wear the appropriate clothing and don't talk like a nerd, you too can look quite cool or "presh" riding a Vespa.

This brings me to the GTS 300i.e Super - currently the coolest and fastest Vespa.

The design is blatantly gorgeous. I spent a lot of time cruising around on a Vespa GTS 300i.e Super last weekend, and I can confirm that you won't find another scooter that offers a better ride or quicker acceleration.

I realise it's a bit chunky looking. I know the Vespa S 125 is a nicer looking bike, it's lighter and ideal for beginners

But it all depends on what your primary needs are.

Do you need to commute to work and get onto the freeway, or do you need to get around your neighbourhood in a cheaper and more convenient way?

Well you can choose from the Vespa S 150i.e, GTS 250i.e, and GTS 300i.e.

The GTS 300i.e Super is faster off the mark and holds speed much more easily up hills; and because you can take it onto the freeway it has no limits. It also provides essential storage space under the seat and has a glove compartment for keys and other items.

And to make life much easier, Vespa has come up with FREE riding lessons.

You can enjoy private lessons in a safe and secluded environment at the Vespa Riding Academy.

Skills range from basic to advanced, and the Vespa team will help you obtain your written learners' licence and full bike licence.

So you can do what you do every day - it's just better on a Vespa.
