Supercar taken to extreme

PHUTI MPYANE | 05 December, 2011 21:37

At times in this column I've mentioned the knack that aftermarket tuners have of adding extra appeal to a car - something manufacturers have either avoided or been blind to.

But, in defence of the corporate suits, the possibilities of giving a car differents looks are vast so a final look - and one that will have international appeal - is generally chosen.

But the pimp-brigade is always waiting around the corner to pick up the scraps, cultivating an end product by tweaking a bit there, or adding a bit here, to appease individuals who feel short-changed on charisma.

The ideal buyer profile for this car is likely to be someone who is cheesed off at Audi for not making its most extreme R8 GT extreme enough.

Little-known German tuners, TC Concepts, has shown its vision of how an Audi R8 should look.

Named the "Toxique", this body kit includes a unique front bumper.

Is it the only one of its kind though? No it's not. If you can rewind a few weeks back, I went to drive a car, an Audi in fact, which had the exact same snout chin as you see on this R8.

I can imagine the TC Concept guy who thought up this move, chatting to himself saying: "Ze bumper on ze Audi RS3, RS5 and TTRS vud look better on ze R8. Idiots!"

So he carried on with fitment. However, this is unlikely to be the simple task of swopping aprons.

The R8 is a far more low-arsed, far wider-bodied libido stirrer than the aforementioned Audis.

They'd have to design the bumper from scratch, which they did, and decorated the tips with pure carbon fibre, which is expensive and light.

There's more, obviously, than the shimmering black lip gloss and, still moving rearwards on the outside sill, you'll find that the wheel arches are flared, side-skirts extended, mirror caps redesigned and on its rump, if you still have "Leopards" to spend, you can specify the gigantic rear wing.

You should really. What's an R8 without some sort of protrusion out back?

While still on the backside, TC Concepts went for radical and importantly, cocky.

This is the business end that most road users will see of the R8 and they apply lashings of carbon fibre to redesign a bold bumper with a thickly slatted diffuser.

The LED rear light clusters are courtesy of the very car it mocks, the R8 GT. Intimidated? You should be. The exhaust tips you see here may look like standard fare but they are the conclusion of an optional sports exhaust system.

This Toxique kit appears properly mischievous, more especially when finished off with the company's in-house designed 20-inch alloy wheels.

Because this is merely a body kit, you can stick with standard Audi rims. I wouldn't advise going that route even though the V10 R8's fabulous, multi-spoke set isn't shabby.

For the suitably sporty, TC Concepts also garnish the cabin with carbon fibre or (everywhere else in fact) with a cheaper glass and carbon fibre treatment. That will be 16800 euros Sir, thank you.
