For many South Africans, Toyota is seen as a provider of family carriers more than anything else.

But the Toyota we all know will soon look be different.

Car fanatics have up to now, not looked to Toyota for inpirational machines or for exciting bling. Well, that's all about to change. Toyota is about to go on the offensive in the sports car market.

News that Toyota's 86 sports car will be on our shores in the second quarter of next year is an exciting sign of great things to come.

Toyota South Africa is excited about the new arrival car. Toyota SA's Clynton Yon, says the sporty 86 will be an easy sell.

Yon dismissed suggestion that Toyota would face challenges in the sports car segment, saying the brand's sports car heritage dated back 50 years.

Yon said the new 86 - unveiled at the Tokyo Motor Show this week and co-developed with Subaru - would be a combination of excellent performance and competitive pricing.

Toyota SA is optimistic that its new baby is ready to tackle the industry leaders.

I have to differ, though. This is German territory and anyone seen driving something else would be frowned on.

"Toyota is no longer just a provider of transport but of fun," Yon said.

"This car will provide a great package; we can't fail," he said. Yon said it was too early to give out more information. "I don't want to give away too many details at this stage."

At first he would not be drawn on pricing, other than to say it would be competitive. However he later let slip that it would come in at under R400 000.
