It's still a long way off, but Audi lovers can look forward to the third-generation RS4 Avant in the first quarter of next year.

The combination of its 4.2-litre V8 engine producing 331kW, the seven-speed S tronic and quattro permanent all-wheel all adds up to potent performance, with a high level of everyday practicality.

Powering the RS4 Avant is the same engine one finds in the RS5 Coupé and drivers can expect a 0-100km/h sprint in 4.7 seconds, while it will level off at a governed 250km/h.

And as with so many vehicles these days, fuel consumption is down from previous generations and the 4.2 FSI engine should return figures of about 11 litres per 100 km.

Drivers can let the dual-clutch transmission shift automatically or change gears manually using the selector lever or the paddles on the steering wheel.

For that explosive start, when you want to be quick out of the box, the Launch Control can be activated.

Like every RS model from Audi, the RS 4 Avant comes standard with quattro permanent all-wheel drive.

Three driving modes will be available - comfort, auto and dynamic - with each one influencing various aspects of the vehicles characteristics.
