On the IT highway
Inspirational leader Lillian Barnard broke through the "pale male" barrier in the IT world with global firm IBM, working in Europe. She now runs her own business, helping corporations to transform and moves about in a 4x4, says EDWIN NAIDU.
What was your first car?
VW Golf III. I bougt the car on our company car scheme at the time.
What did it cost?
That was 1996, I can't remember the exact price, but it could have been between R80000 and R100000.
How long did you have it?
I had it for at least three years.
What attracted you to it in the first place?
My late father, Peter, loved VWs and I think my purchase decision was deeply influenced by his perception of VW. So I really wanted to surprise and impress him because he wasn't aware that I was buying a car at the time. I absolutely loved his first reaction and definitely got his approval.
What's the most surprising thing about your current car?
I have a Land Rover Freelander. I know this may sound obvious but I just love going seamlessly over speed bumps without that screeching sound.
What made you choose the car you have?
I lived in Europe for seven years and became accustomed to driving 4x4s. So I secretly resolved to never drive any other car unless it was a 4x4, because these cars are typically robust and provide a great sense of security.
Tell us about your first big accident?
I drove down Catherine Street on a Friday afternoon during peak-hour traffic and I wasn't really concentrating. Obviously I drove into the car in front of me. Fortunately, neither car sustained any significant damage - to my surprise and great relief.
You're driving down the Cote d'Azur in a Ferrari Daytona - who would be your dream passenger?
My 17-year-old son Caleb, without a shadow of a doubt. I will most probably give him the key because he loves sports cars.
Have you found anything on the market that you simply could not resist?
Actually not ... but a car which could drive me, will definitely get my attention!
In your own words, what drives you?
My passion is to see individuals and organisations reach their highest potential. My company provides consulting and coaching services that strive to leave a lasting impact and propel individuals and organisations to move forward. Hence, I am using my business experience and expertise to help make this difference.
