She Says...

Its blood is blue, but its edginess gives it real British class, writes Andrea Nagel

Its English heritage gives Jaguar's designers more freedom to be creative than other car manufacturers, and they are also renowned for putting a lot of engineering into their work.

Jaguar is constantly bringing technical updates and breakthroughs to the car market and, being English, there is a certain proper style to its creations.

Many people love British labels and London remains a centre for fashion and design. Jaguar must relish having Burberry, Paul Smith and Seville Row, to name a few, as compatriot brands. They suit the marque.

How perfect to extend manicured toes, encapsulated in an iconic, technicoloured and striped Paul Smith heel. How fitting to open the well-weighted door and step onto the sidewalk in a charcoal skinny suit, even better if it's topped off with a bowler hat and a walking stick.

You can't be casual in the Jaguar XF. It's exceptional interior, its clean lines, its simplicity and clever use of space are key to the sophisticated elegance that complements the brilliant driving experience that the car offers.

The beautiful cast-alloy gear selector, the "JaguarDrive Selector" as they call it, has already gained recognition for its part in the distinctive XF welcoming handshake which involves the illuminated red stop/start button pulsating like a heartbeat until pressed, whereupon the JaguarDrive Selector rises into the driver's hand and the facia vents open silently.

The phosphor-blue halo illumination and interior mood lighting sets the XF cabin apart from other cars, a bit like how the fine stitching, classic materials and excellent craftsmanship of designer couture sets it apart from high-street fashion.

Think superb audio control, user-friendly navigation and technical settings, as well as a rear parking camera and radar-based blind-spot monitors.

Impressive added extras include a steering wheel warmer, "Jaguar sensors" instead of buttons to activate cabin lights and open the glove compartment with futuristic-like ease, and multiway, adjustable power seats that come standard on all models. An optional extra are the actively ventilated heated and cooled seats.

The XF's portable audio interface allows simple, direct connection of iPod and MP3 players with full control via the touch-screen or steering wheel-mounted controls.

Now these are all features that we already know about, having driven the Jaguar XF earlier this year. What sets the newest XF apart from its predecessor is the upgraded 5-litre engine that purrs beneath the pearly bonnet.

This new engine, powered by eight almighty cylinders, delivers power and performance of a different level. The refined power trains and outstanding driving dynamics push the boundaries of Jaguar's design language, bringing drivers to stratospheric levels of confidence.

The car's sound quality is another key characteristic that Jaguar drivers relish. Jaguar engineers have deliberately accentuated acoustic feedback into the cabin in order to further increase driving pleasure.

I recently interviewed the designer of a famous English watch who said: "The strength of design in England is the tension between funkiness and tradition. There is a definite refined English culture but there is also freedom to experiment."

This description of English design holds especially true for the Jaguar. It has the classiness of a true blue blood with the edginess of an underground icon.
