My kind of holiday: Neville Pillay

Shelley Seid | 27 June, 2010 00:000 Comments

DJ Neville Pillay, of East Coast Radio, talks to Shelley Seid about New York subways and super-heights

Where did you spend your last holiday? Portuguese Island, Mozambique.

What was the best thing you did while there? Partying on the beach with plenty of 2M, my Mozambican beer of choice.

Your favourite city abroad and why? New York. The bright lights, the Empire State Building, Radio City, Madison Square Garden, Times Square.

What must a first-time visitor see there? The view from the top of the Empire State Building, even if you suffer from vertigo like I do. I practically crawled across the viewing platform and had to claw my way up to take a look.

What should they not bother with? Trying to get anywhere on the New York subway. It's incredibly confusing.

What was your best holiday, ever? Amazingly enough, Port Elizabeth and the Sunshine Coast two years ago. It's an area of unspoilt beauty with nature reserves, the Big Five and amazing beaches, all within driving distance from the city.

What was your worst holiday ever? What happened? Probably my second visit to Mozambique, where we were constantly harassed, firstly for bribes by the cops - "Welcome to Mozambique, now pay me," - and secondly by the wildlife. We had decided to rough it at a local caravan park and ended up being eaten alive by mosquitoes and cockroaches.

Which is the worst hotel you have stayed in? A three-star hotel on the KZN north coast that shall remain nameless. I'm convinced it was the place they shot Hotel Rwanda. I sent a letter of complaint and they had the audacity to offer me two free nights. Like I'll be rushing back.

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday or pinched from a hotel? In Mauritius, I was so amazed to meet an Indian with a French accent that I gave him my bottle of Jack. He gave me a beautiful statuette of an Indian tabla player in return.

One travel destination you would call "never again"? Mumbai. Everyone is out to get something, especially from the NRIs (non-resident Indians). They see you as fair game: "You walked out 150 years ago, now see who is smarter."
