My Kind Of Holiday: Sorisha Naidoo

Shelley Seid | 26 September, 2010 00:000 Comments

Eastern Mosaic presenter Sorisha Naidoo speaks to Shelley Seid about vegetarian eating, seven-star hotels and how to find the best spots anywhere

Where did you spend your last holiday? Las Vegas.

What was the best thing you did there? Gambled, shopped and ate.

Your favourite cities abroad and why? Delhi and Mumbai. Besides the great food, energy and people, I have the most vivid and beautiful memories of the cities themselves. I also felt safe enough to walk around at 2am.

What must a first-time visitor see? The street markets are my favourite. They close at 11pm, you can bargain your heart out and leave with the most beautiful things.

What should they not bother with? The tap water.

What was your best holiday, ever? A surprise trip to Dubai, where we stayed at the seven-star Burj Al Arab. The suite had two floors and the massive lounge was filled with chocolates and free perfume. I forgot my conditioner, so they sent up a massive bottle of Bulgari conditioner. I could happily have lived in the room.

What was your worst holiday ever? A trip to Mauritius. Everything was great but I did not realise I was pregnant at the time and I felt really sick and tired throughout the trip.

Your favourite SA destination, and why? The Drakensberg. It's always great to get away from the norm and just have "quiet".

Your favourite restaurant, anywhere? Linger Longer in Sandton. I'm a vegetarian and it's difficult to find restaurants that serve starters, mains and desserts that you love. It's a great place for celebrating something special.

What is the most exotic dish you have ever eaten on holiday? Palm hearts. It doesn't get more exotic than that for vegetarians.

One place you want to see before you die? The Dead Sea.

Have you had any embarrassing moments as a traveller? I once took someone else's bag off the carousel. I felt like a deer in the headlights when the owner came up to me to take it back.

What's your best piece of travel advice? Always ask the concierge and taxi drivers where the best shopping, night spots and eateries are. They know.
