Bet the farm on this one

COUNTRY LIFE: Dusk to Dawn B & B is set on an 1800ha working farm in southern Mpumalanga Picture: DUSK TO DAWN

Dusk to Dawn caters for children and parents, writes Claire Keeton

A distant roaring, like that of a soccer stadium, drifted out of the mist as the sun rose over Dusk to Dawn.

Besides being a stylish country house, Dusk to Dawn is also a working farm and the roar was from the piggery at feeding time.

We later saw piglets being born when farmer Johann Engelbrecht was showing us around. After landing on the hay, they are quick to stand and find their mother's teats, despite closed eyes and sibling rivalry.

My four-year-old son was riveted by the action but his friend, a girl of six, found the smell and the noise overpowering.

My child wakes up early so Engelbrecht allowed him to help milk the cows and bottle-feed the silky calves.

The 1800ha farm is also home to horses, ponies and goats. With a tree house, playground, solar-heated swimming pool and, best of all, endless space it is a children's paradise.

But it is also a haven for adults with its garden, fine accommodation and exceptional breakfasts.

The garden is a riot of colour and the views of southern Mpumalanga go on for miles.

Myself, a Danish friend and our children arrived after dark, delayed by roadworks. But after a peaceful night we woke up rested and farm offered everything we wanted, and more.

Bird Life SA has recognised Dusk to Dawn as a bird-friendly establishment, thanks in part to a thatched viewing deck overlooking a dam.

Enthusiasts can also hike or horse ride to a nearby river for a birding expedition or picnic.

The farm B also promotes itself as a painting destination and artists may find the fauna and vistas inspiring. Aspiring painters can book a holiday that includes "demonstrations and tutoring in the medium of your choice".

One of the fruits available are msoba berries (black night shade). In Patagonia in South America legend has it whoever eats the local blue-black Calafate berry will return.

I know this to be true and wouldn't be surprised if eating msoba at Dusk to Dawn, has the same effect.
