My Kind of Holiday: Lorna Maseko

Travel Weekly | 04 September, 2011 01:18
LORNA MASEKO

Where did you spend your last holiday?

Where did you spend your last holiday?

I went to Hong Kong with Top Billing.

What was the best thing you did while there?

Shopped. Hong Kong is the hub of shopaholics. Everything stays open really late and at 1am the streets are still crowded and buzzing.

Your favourite city abroad, and why?

It has to be Hong Kong. The hustle and bustle reminds me of Johannesburg.

What must a first-time visitor do there?

Get into the culture, eat the food, walk the streets, gawk at the hanging pigs and watch them get cut up on the pavements.

What should they not bother with?

Attending a tea ceremony. It's boring and the final product tasted revolting - no sugar and no Cremora!

What was your best holiday, ever?

My honeymoon. We decided to do a three-week road trip around Southern Africa instead of going overseas. We took in Swaziland and Mozambique on the way and saw so much of our beautiful country.

What was your worst holiday ever? What happened?

I treated myself to Mauritius - on my own. I have no idea what I was thinking. I don't really drink or party, fat Frenchmen kept hitting on me. If you need time on your own, go to the bush.

What is the worst hotel you have stayed in?

The first destination on our honeymoon was St Lucia. There was bird poo and really old linen on the bed. Fortunately, things only got better from there.

What is the best thing you have been given on holiday ... or pinched from a hotel?

On my birthday, the Shangri-La hotel in Hong Kong baked me a cake with "Happy Birthday Lorna" icing.

Who would be your fantasy holiday companion? Why?

My husband. He is my best friend and we have a great time no matter where we are.

Your favourite SA destination, and why?

Oyster Bay in the Eastern Cape for its sand dunes and crystal-clear water.

Your favourite restaurant, anywhere?

Nobu in Cape Town. The cod I had there is the best food I have ever eaten. Given what it costs, don't share it!

What do you avoid on holiday?

Waking up early.
