Bafana's Moon free for now
The culpable homicide case against Bafana Bafana player Bryce Moon was dropped yesterday because of lack of evidence, despite four witnesses being lined up to testify against him.
Moon, who flew in for the trial from Greece, where he plays for Panathinaikos, looked relieved as he walked out of the Randburg Magistrate's Court.
The soccer star, dressed in a pink striped shirt and slacks, was due to plead to culpable homicide charges at the trial, which began on a date arranged to suit his sporting schedule.
Moon allegedly ran over and killed 25-year-old domestic worker Mavis Ncube in Sandton when he was driving home from a party in the early hours in June.
It is believed the party was arranged by Bafana Bafana captain Aaron Mokoena to celebrate the team's performance in the Confederations Cup.
Moon left court a free man yesterday after Randburg's chief prosecutor provisionally withdrew the case .
"I'm very relieved everything is over," Moon said.
"I'm looking forward to the World Cup. If my coach needs me, I'm ready to play for my country."
Moon's lawyer, Naren Sangham, said the state "was not in a position to proceed in the matter with the evidence it had".
The provisional withdrawal of the case means that if investigations reveal further evidence the police "can recharge him, but obviously the flaws in the case are so vast", said Sangham.
One of the witnesses, Thandi Sibanda, who was a close friend of Ncube, was among those who were to testify.
She left the court in tears yesterday, together with Ncube's former employers.
Ncube's father, Tinus Mpofu, who was also at court yesterday, said he felt "pain" on seeing Moon and his family in court, but added: "There's nothing I can do at the moment.
"Even if I feel anger, it can never bring my daughter back."
