Granny and kids on drugs charges



AN ELDORADO Park granny and three members of her family were arrested for drug dealing yesterday.

The SA Revenue Service and the police's asset forfeiture unit investigated the family when they discovered large amounts of money in their bank accounts.

The woman, 65, her son, her daughter-in-law and her 26-year-old grandson, are all unemployed.

Hawks spokesman Capt Paul Ramaloko said the family might also have been "operating an illegal gambling business" from their home.

The family will appear in the Protea Magistrate's Court tomorrow. - Harriet McLea

Officials arrested in R15m fraud case

ELEVEN employees of the department of agriculture in Mpumalanga have been arrested for fraud and theft amounting to R15-million.

It is alleged that the officials claimed payments for services that were not rendered and made payments to four companies.

They will appear in the KwaMhlanga Magistrate's Court today. - Zwelakhe Shangase

Cash-in-transit heist a 'battlefield'

AN ARMED robber was killed yesterday after attacking security guards loading cash into an ATM in Elandsfontein, east of Johannesburg.

The man shot a security guard three times before taking the guard's gun. Two other security guards fatally wounded the attacker.



Police spokesman Sgt Mduduzi Nhlabathi described the clash as a "battlefield".

Construction worker killed

A CONSTRUCTION worker based at the Allandale interchange, north of Johannesburg, was killed yesterday afternoon. He was trapped between two concrete barriers.- Harriet McLea

No terror threat to World Cup

THERE is no terror threat to the 2010 Fifa World Cup, Minister of State Security Siyabonga Cwele said yesterday.

He told Parliament: "Our assessment to date does not indicate any security threat to the event, including the cancer of global terrorism. " - Brendan Boyle

Worker survives 11000 volts

A CONSTRUCTION worker was electrocuted by 11 000 volts of electricity when he fell off a ladder yesterday and landed on an electrical transformer in Mooi Nooi, near Rustenburg.

Netcare 911 spokesman Chris Botha said: "He landed clear of the transformer where people could rescue him."

The man was severely burned on his chest, arms and legs. - Harriet McLea
