Opposition parties within Buffalo City Municipality have questioned a move by Executive Mayor Zukisa Faku to beef up her personal security detail, believed to now consist of eight bodyguards.
Both Faku and acting municipal manager Dr Lulama Zitha yesterday confirmed that the mayor’s security had been increased, but declined to give reasons or details.
It is, however, believed that the mayor now has eight bodyguards in her entourage.
PAC councillor Jerome Mdyolo speculates that political infighting within the African National Congress could have played a role. But he says as a public representative, the new security arrangements could hamper the mayor’s interaction with the public.
