Minister 'diabolical'
Arts and Culture Minister Lulu Xingwana was undermining local artists by not supporting a boycott of the World Cup kick-off concert, the Creative Workers Union of South Africa said yesterday.
"We are aware that Xingwana is part of an elitist agenda to undermine African and South African artists and
co-opted by Fifa who are finding it difficult to progressively include more artists," the union said.
Xingwana said the local organising committee had gone a long way towards ensuring participation of local and African artists, and that the department did not support the boycott.
The union believed Xingwana's "diabolical" comments were intended to make American culture stronger.
