Thousands of tourists were treated to a rare Cape Town snowfall this morning on top of Table Mountain.

Snowflakes fell sporadically throughout the morning, adding to small drifts of snow left over from below freezing conditions overnight. It is the biggest snowfall on top of the mountain in several years.

Collette Van Aswegen, marketing manager for the Table Mountain Aerial Cableway, said the temperature at the summit was between 0 degrees C and 1 degree C at 8am this morning.

Further afield, the mountains above Ceres in the Boland were covered in a thick layer of snow, with more expected tomorrow as a cold front moves across the country. There were also several reports of flooding in Cape Town, where steady rain has been falling since the weekend.
