Khoisan want recognition

Sapa | 02 September, 2010 22:510 Comments

Khoisan representatives plan to march on Parliament today to demand recognition of their status and rights as South Africa's "first indigenous people".

The Khoisan Emergency Committee said yesterday that "thousands of Khoi and Boesman" men, women and children would take part in tomorrow's march.

The march would also be a public declaration of the establishment of the Khoi and Boesman National Assembly, the committee said.

The march would be followed by a ceremony at the Company's Gardens, Cape Town.

The committee said it wanted to be properly consulted by the Department of Co-operative Governance and traditional affairs.

"We demand full recognition of all our blood-line leaders, including the Boesmans, Namas, Griquas, Koranas and the Cape Khoi," it said.

"We demand a full review of all land rights claims submitted by our people and the proper and sustainable implementation of all agreements relating to settled claims."
