More women had participated in the Gauteng HIV testing campaign than men, the Gauteng department of health said on Sunday.

“The number of women who tested exceeded 1.2 million compared to more than 760,000 men,” said spokesman Simon Zwane in a statement.

There were also 44,000 children tested during the same period, between April last year and May this year.

These figures were drawn from the records of the HIV counselling and testing campaign launched by President Jacob Zuma.

With over two million people tested, Zwane said it was hoped that the campaign would reach its target of 3.3 million by the end of June.

Testing would be offered at Youth Day celebrations on June 16.
