The Inkatha Freedom Party says the proposed nationalisation of mines has the potential to cause irreparable harm to South Africa's economy.

IFP national council members (NEC) who met for two days in Durban last week applauded the party's president Mangosuthu Buthelezi “for taking a strong stance against nationalisation”.

The party NEC members also resolved that there was no place in South Africa's national discourse for a debate on nationalisation.

The nationalisation debate had closed decades ago in other parts of the world, they said.

The members also expressed disappointment with the lack of leadership from the ANC on nationalisation.

“Our economic vision cannot withstand the uncertainty this debate is stirring, just as our economy will not withstand this failed socialist policy.”

The call for nationalisation of mines was proposed by the ANC Youth League and it has recently received backing from Cosatu.
