Sibiya shooting 'cowardly': Cosatu

Cosatu KwaZulu-Natal says the shooting of eThekwini regional secretary Sbu Sibiya was a callous act of cowardice.

"This is the worst and most callous act of cowardice that all of us as law-abiding citizens must condemn in the strongest possible terms," said Congress of SA Trade Unions provincial secretary Zet Luzipo.

"Sibiya was a true servant of the people who had absolute hatred of corrupt practices and was very loyal to the revolutionary cause of our people," he said

Luzipo was worried about an apparent trend in the eThekwini municipality of leadership being seen as an "easy target for assassination".

Sibiya, 40, was shot dead in the driveway of his home in Inanda, Durban, on Monday night. He had just returned from his office.

Police spokeswoman Brigadier Phindile Radebe said he was shot in the head and shoulder.

Police were not sure how many people were involved in the shooting.

A political violence task team would investigate to determine whether the murder was politically related, Radebe said.

No arrests had been made.

The ANC provincial executive committee said the party had lost a "dedicated, committed and nurtured leader" in the death of Sibiya.

"His death will leave a void that will hardly be replaced," it said.

It called on the police to leave no stone unturned in its investigation and asked its members and the public to assist in any way they could.

Another ANC official, councillor Wiseman Mshibe, was shot dead in March.

At the time, Sibiya told reporters that Mshibe's death was not politically motivated, and was not related to the local government elections.
