The department of health says hospitals in Gauteng are owed R1.5 billion.

Medical aids and other funders owed the department R167,518,352, said departmental spokesman Simon Zwane.

"The amount owed by other government departments and other provinces ranges from R4,4 million to R672m," he said in a statement.

DA Gauteng health spokesman Jack Bloom said it was a "scandal" that R168m was owed by private medical aids.

He said the Gauteng health department had promised to collect outstanding payments, but that little progress had been made over the years.

"The debt continues to grow, rather than diminish," said Bloom.
