The ANC has denied a note was circulated to some branches discussing party leadership ahead of its national elective conference in 2012, according to a report.

"There is no ANC document in Gauteng that is discussing the questions of leadership as far as 2012 is concerned... we are very strict in how we deal with documentation," provincial spokesperson Nkenke Kekana told the Sunday Times.

"We approve each and every document that is official, even if it's an opinion of a person."

Kekana said such a document, guiding branches to nominate a party leader, would be drafted from the end of the year, when the national executive committee opened the nomination process.

The Sunday Times reported that Johannesburg and Tshwane party members had begun informal discussions about Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe succeeding President Jacob Zuma.

In June, the ANC put a lid on leadership succession debate at the central committee meeting of the Congress of SA Trade Unions. It said such debates were premature, adding that current leaders should be supported in taking forward their mandate until the end of their term in office.

The elective conference takes place next year December.

The ANC's spokespeople were not immediately available to comment.
