The man arrested in connection with the death of Johannesburg schoolgirl Louise de Waal was sentenced to clean kitchen sinks after being found guilty of indecent assault in 2007.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Tshisikhawe Ndou confirmed that the man suspected of being the "Sunday Rapist", was arrested for indecent assault on May 18 2007.

His victims in that case were two 16-year-old girls from Roodepoort.

On October 31 that year, he was sentenced to three years in prison, suspended for three years.

He was also sentenced to an unknown number of hours of community service at the rundown Dr Yusuf Dadoo Hospital, on Gauteng's West Rand.

People sentenced to community service at the hospital clean the kitchen at the weekend.

Chores include mopping floors, cleaning serving trolleys and tables, and washing the large pots and pans used in the industrial-scale kitchen.

Two kitchen workers at the old public hospital confirmed that a man who has the same name as the man accused of murdering De Waal worked at the hospital until about May.

The man cannot be named until he has pleaded in court.

The kitchen workers could not identify the man from the identikit photo of the De Waal murder suspect.

One kitchen worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: "[He] was one of those guys who used to come on a Saturday."

The worker said the man was "last seen in May".

"He was a friendly guy. He didn't smoke but would stand outside with us on smoke breaks. We didn't talk about personal matters."

Police suspect, but have not yet confirmed, that the De Waal murder suspect is the "Sunday Rapist" known to prowl the suburbs in Gauteng and the North West on Sunday mornings looking for teenage girls to kidnap and rape.

There are 10 cases linked to the Sunday Rapist dating back to November 2008.

De Waal was kidnapped at gunpoint on her way to school in Roodepoort on Wednesday. Her body was found burned beyond recognition on a farm in the Magaliesberg on the same day.

The suspect will appear in the Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court today.

Pretoria senior public prosecutor Carina Coetzee will act for the state.

Investigating officer Peet du Toit, who spent the entire weekend preparing the case for court, said "all will be revealed" in court today.
