Maharaj shrugs off 'dodgy millions' allegations

Presidential spokesman Mac Maharaj has shrugged off allegations of unlawful conduct that he and his wife Zarina received millions of rands from French arms company Thales.

Maharaj on Sunday said the Sunday Times, despite publishing an extensive report over two pages, had not found the space to publish his three-sentence emailed response to the paper in full.

Instead, it had selected parts of his response for publication, and this had consciously limited the public's awareness of what he had said.

"The fact that the Scorpions did not bring any charges against either of us should make you alive to the fact that the reported insinuations and allegations of unlawful conduct by us implied in your questions may once again result in, and subject us to character assassination and trial by media consciously making use of selective information only," Maharaj replied to the Sunday Times.

"These issues belong to matters that were investigated by the Scorpions. Neither Zarina Maharaj nor I are prepared to subject ourselves to a separate and additional investigation by a member of the media based on isolated aspects of a comprehensive investigation conducted by institutions established and empowered by law to do so," he stated.

The Democratic Alliance has since called on President Jacob Zuma to suspend Maharaj without delay.

Stuart Farrow, the DA's spokesman on transport, said he would ask the Public Protector to investigate the allegations.

Of course he's going to deny it. He's as guilty as all hell. Zuma should suspend him immediately, and let the investigators proceed with their work. Mac's denial is purely out of fear. Ja boet, the truth will set you free.

The only way to bring down these crooked politicians and ANC leaders is to expose their lieutenants and then turn them against the rest to get the house of cards to fold. Their blatant outright theft and fraudulent actions are tantamount to treason. This is and will always be a stumbling block to moving South Africa forward - time to let them know enough's, enough!

Yup, of course he's going to shrug off the allegations. Everyone else in government does - and they get away with it. Travelgate MPs a case in point ...

I see there are people who are qualified as judges in here. Not so long ago the DA was accussed with CORRUPTION and most of u were singing a different tune. Now the MAC stands accused and y'all declare him guilty.

Agreed , Maharaj must be immediately suspended , but JGZ 783 who appointed Maharaj must also resign - to prove to saffers that corruption in saffer is not yet legal ,and still a crime .

Form Zarina's Web page NOTHING TO JUSTIFY A PROSECUTION: THE NPA CLOSES THIS FILE

Despite Judge Hefer’s findings, the Scorpions’ investigations and leaks continued for years to come, with no charges being laid against us.. After almost 7 years of untrammeled violation of our rights to dignity, privacy, and the presumption of innocence until found guilty in a court of law, the NPA closed its files on us because they had found nothing to justify a prosecution.

But the damage those leaks inflicted on us as individuals and as a family remains a sad indictment of the way state institutions were undermined during the period of Thabo Mbeki’s administration.
It remains a challenge for democratic South Africa to ensure that such abuse of power does not happen again. Famous last words?

Maharaj is being dishonest about the Scorpions - which were closed down before they could finish investigating his]& other ANC klepto-cronies' dishonesty.

One thing our corrupt former top cop got right: "the friend of a crook is a crook". I wonder if he had Jacob 783 & his friends in mind.

The tragedy is that it is the poorest of poor, who are deprived of aid by the ANC's looting, who suffer through ANC dishonesty.

Deny, lie, and deny some more. That is all South Africa is going to get from well-spoken, well-educated lair. But a LAIR, and a thief, nonetheless

If you read his statement carefully you will see that nowhere in it he has strongly denied or rejected with contempt - as one would expect - all damning allegations, or said anything to disprove them if they are untrue.

This is not a matter of where there is smoke...what the Sunday Times has shown is a fire. Maharaj knows very well that the scorpions failed to get the necessary cooperation from other countries to fully follow the paper trail. I see Shaik going back to jail and Maharaj joining him.
