To date a total of 405 rhinos have been poached this year, an increase of 21.6 percent from last year, SA National Parks said on Tuesday.

This compared to 333 rhinos poached in 2010, SANParks said in a statement.

From 2009 to 2010 the incidence of poaching rose by 173 percent and from 2008 to 2009 there was a 47 percent increase.

Areas where poaching was most problematic were the Kruger National Park and the Limpopo and KwaZulu-Natal provinces.

The number of arrests has also increased by approximately 27.3 percent to 210 people, from the 165 people in 2010.
