The University of Johannesburg has closed applications for the day following the death of a person during a stampeded to get in.

EWN reports a mother of an applicant died and several other people were left injured after a stampede at a gate.

UJ registrar Marie Muller told eNews channel that the incident happened as students queued for last-minute applications to the tertiary institution.

The Times newspaper reported tens of thousands of young people hungry for a chance at tertiary education will miss out this year - more than 180000 of them will be turned away from the country's nine top universities.

This despite Minister of Higher Education Blade Nzimande promising last year that space would be made for 180000 first-years in 2012.

At the University of Johannesburg alone, about 74000 would-be students will be turned away because there are only places for 11000.

University authorities and police have been unreachable for further comment.
