A North West farmer in his fifties was killed and members of his family assaulted in the early hours of Saturday morning, police said.
Captain Adele Myburgh said five men entered the Klipplaatdrift property in Ventersdorp at about 4.10am.
"They were attacked by five unknown suspects and during the attack a struggle ensued between the suspects and the farmer," said Myburgh.
"The farmer was killed during the attack. The wife of the farmer was severely assaulted and [was later] admitted to hospital and the farmer's sister was slightly injured during the incident," she said.
The five suspects fled with stolen property.
Myburgh said police were following up leads and expected arrests soon. North West provincial commissioner, Lt-Gen Zukiswa Mbombo, sent her condolences to the family of the deceased.
