Gauteng motorists are not being stopped in roadblocks and forced to register for e-tolls, the SA National Roads Agency Limited (Sanral) said on Friday.

This was a "malicious rumour" as no roadblocks had been conducted or would be conducted by the company, it said in a statement.

Rumours that the government-owned company, responsible for the controversial and unpopular e-tolls in Gauteng, was forcing e-tags on motorists had social networks Twitter and Facebook aflutter.

Sanral said: "No staff from either Sanral or its toll operator ETC have conducted any roadblocks as described in the emails and social network postings."

The company said the rumours started after its staff were seen marking roads and that motorists thought they were being stopped in a Sanral roadblock.

"Sanral reiterates that it and ETC are not currently authorised to conduct roadblocks."
