Disgruntled Durban metro police officers have vowed to make the city ungovernable if their boss is not axed immediately.

They have accused Eugene Nzama of corruption, nepotism, lack of managerial skills and misuse of police vehicles.

Hundreds of police officers, who are members of the SA Municipal Workers' Union, brought the Durban city centre to a standstill yesterday when they marched, carrying placards that read "To hell with Nzama", "Standard Two is not a qualification for your position" and "Metro police is not your spaza shop. Give contracts to monkeys and not us".

A scuffle ensued between South African Police Service officers and the metro police members.

Union spokesman Nhlanhla Nyandeni said Nzama must be fired because he "has done more harm than good to the police force".

The union demanded that police officers on contract be employed permanently to allow them to obtain medical aid benefits, pension funds and maternity leave.

"Many of our members have been on contract for more than eight years," Nyandeni said.

Accepting their memorandum, eThekwini mayor James Nxumalo said he would call an executive council meeting today to discuss the grievances.
