Mystery surrounds murder of club owner
Across the road from the Green Point Sacred Heart Catholic Church, at the door of the famous gay nightclub Bronx Action Bar, Craig Quinn wept for the loss of his friend and boss Bruno Bronn.
Bronn's body was found in his home by his domestic worker on Tuesday morning - his hands tied and marks around his neck.
His death has sent shock waves through the Cape Town nightclub scene and has, according to Quinn, sparked "crazy" speculation.
Quinn had worked for Bronn as a DJ for 12 years.
"I haven't come to terms with his death. He was a good man," said Quinn before choking up.
Rumour mills have already started churning - there are allegations that the club hasn't been doing well and that it had to close down. Others have pointed out that Bronn used the services of controversial Specialised Protection Services - a security company that landed in court for not being registered with the Private Security Industry Regulatory Authority.
Several bouncers from the company were hauled to court for not being legitimate security providers. But on Tuesday all the charges against them were dropped.
"SPS is in the news now and everyone is automatically assuming we had problems with the company. That was not the case. We have been using SPS for years, even before it was known as SPS. We've never had problems. And yes, the club was closed for two weeks but that is because Bruno wanted to relocate. He wanted to start afresh somewhere and his lease expires in March," said Quinn.
According to Quinn and Bronx manager Christopher Xaso, Bronn didn't want to pay rent while he was contemplating what to do.
But Pyramid Property Management would not comment on this.
Xaso said he had worked for Bronn for 12 years.
"He treated us like family. We were a family. He was a private man, very professional. He didn't deserve this. He was a hard man when it came to business but as a friend he had a big heart. He always tried to help others and sometimes people would take advantage of that," said Xaso.
Six years ago Bronn's partner, Jonno Isaacs, died of cancer.
"They were a team. Jonno would work in the front of the club and Bruno in the back office. When Jonno died he had to do both. I don't think he mourned Jonno's death properly," said Xaso.
The men believe Bronn was killed by someone he knew because there were no signs of forced entry.
Bronn lived with two dogs, which are being cared for by the club's barman.
