Mourners fed stolen sheep

Sapa | 11 February, 2012 13:42

Three men were arrested in Willowvale on Saturday after they allegedly stole livestock to feed mourners at a funeral service, Eastern Cape police said.

Captain Jackson Manatha said 31 sheep and five goats were stolen from a 82-year-old woman in Dutywa on Friday morning. On Saturday police were informed that five of the stolen sheep had been slaughtered at a funeral service.

"Police went to the funeral service, to the surprise of mourners, and found five skins of [the] sheep in the homestead," Manatha said.

"The meat was already cooked and police confiscated the pots... and loaded them into the police vans."

The remainder of the livestock was recovered except for two sheep and two goats.

The men, aged between 21 and 40, will appear in the Dutywa Magistrate's Court on Monday.
