South African university officials say they have suspended University of KwaZulu-Natal (UKZN) classes indefinitely because of rock-throwing student protesters.

Police said Wednesday the Westville campus near the port city of Durban is among several UKZN campuses where protesting students have been demanding lower fees for several weeks.

Police spokesman Vincent Mdunge says the most violent protests were Tuesday, when four people were arrested and three injured.

According to a university statement, classes were suspended Wednesday and will resume once calm is restored.

Earlier this year in Johannesburg, a stampede killed a woman on an in-person university application day.

Across the country, South Africans seeking to study their way out of poverty are overwhelming universities.
