Cape Town residents have until the end of March to comment on the renaming of 27 streets, the city said on Thursday.

Mayoral committee member for transport and roads Brett Herron said he would look at public proposals as well as a series of suggested name changes from previous years.

He said seven of the streets proposed for renaming cut across multiple sub-councils and wards, impacting on a large number of people across the city.

"These streets will require a more rigorous public participation process."

The seven streets were Hendrik Verwoerd Drive, Jip de Jager Street, Vanguard Drive, Lansdowne Road, Jan Smuts Drive, NY1 in Gugulethu and Willie van Schoor Drive.

Public meetings would be held at venues across the city on March 6, 13, 20 and 27.
