Motsoaledi injects urgency in hospital leadership

SIPHO MASOMBUKA | 24 February, 2012 00:42
Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi

In a move to improve the management of hospitals, the Health Department will this weekend advertise 92 vacant CEO positions.

Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said no one will be fired and the positions were advertised merely to ensure that CEOs were at the appropriate level of deputy director-general and had a health services background.

"We have done an analysis to look at the suitability of our hospital CEOs and we realised that CEOs with no health background were struggling," he said.

He said these positions were either occupied by people who did not have a health background or were lower in seniority than a deputy director-general.

"We have people at level 8 [clerk] who are hospital CEOs," he said.

Motsoaledi said that at no central hospital was there a CEO of deputy director-general rank, and at many hospitals the position was occupied by an acting CEO.

The appointment of CEOs was the responsibility of health MECs, but he said it was now government policy for the minister to work with MECs to appoint CEOs.

Motsoaledi also announced that the R1-billion budgeted for the pilot introduction of national health insurance would be used to lay a foundation for the project.

He said some of the 24 new sections of the National Health Act, which will come into force next month, would "assist us to prepare the foundation for implementing national health insurance. These are sections relating to governance structures".

The minister is a sincere, honest and hard-working man with good intentions. I don't think he will deliver results. Promoting non-performing CEO's to deputy-directors is bizarre. It will cost more - bigger salary for a non-performer in a new position. It does have benefits - 1) supports Zuma's job creation plan, 2) keeps the cadres appeased. It will do nothing for the people who need health care, other than it will take funds away from the intended purpose.

On Jam Alley they use to call things like this , i-obvias! But for the ANC this is not the case. They still believe that you park a bicycle in the garage and the next morning it will be a Rolls Royce.

The voters believe the same, vote for the ANC until they manage funds like the DA

Ja, i think iv heard this song before...this minister has been talking, talking and talking but....I have a sister who's a qualifed nurse, you just don't wanna hear the chaos that's going in the public clinics and hospitals. Motsoaledi will talk, talk and talk, till his term expires, and am definately sure, a lot of his comrades will want him to go another term; just like the useless coach of bafanan bafana...a new mandate will be put in place even though the s!cker failed in his first. Just where exactly will these so called ceo's with health background come from? everybody knows we don't have such animal in SA, there's no such training or qualification available from any of our universities!! Just what is he talking about????

.....In spite of the general perception on the qualities of Minstrel Motsoaledi, his worst blotch is to belong to an organized crime syndicate as the ANC. As such, any "good"intentions become the hidden agenda of the corrupt politicians....

...Not firing anyone, means whoever puppet installed as CEO must abide by the rules of the mafias groups inside. Hence corrupt and thieves belonging to NEHAWU, DENOSA, doctors and other graduates from Clicks (you pay less at Clicks) who are having the best time of their lives, will continue the sucking with renewed vigour and enthusiasm, because they are untouchable.......

...Meanwhile, Motsoaledi will keep on attacking the "evil" Medical Aids (not entirely untrue on this) and private medical care in an effort to brainwash the gullible to favour the huge white elephant of the NHI as it is now...........

I have a lot of time for this minister - he is making the right noises, and I think he will take the right actions.
The failed cadre-deployment policy of the ANC must make way for suitably qualified appointments who are committed to the interests of all South Africans.

He said no one will be fired but he didnt say that people won't be demoted. I think he is trying to bring new and capable people into the CEO positions without really firing anyone. Maybe he will train those incapable to be more capable hence he said he wants people with health industry background. I'm holding thumbs for you Minister, hope it works out.

I will not be holding my breath. I think, more money down the drain/into pockets.
The NHI will NOT work, the government are unable to maintain and upkeep the hospitals, look at Baragwanath Hospital, and Frere Hospital in East London, and and and.................

The ANC cannot demote anyone without causing even bigger problems. They can only reward mediocrity. Look at our current president for a good example.
