"The traps were set last night [Thursday] but we didn't catch anything," said spokesman Musa Mntambo. "We will continue to look for them."

He said there was a possibility that they could have moved to another area.

Over the past two days, the animals were believed to be roaming between the Ophapha Game Reserve and the Intibane lodge.

Rangers realised they were on the loose after a couple reported seeing a lion.

They went to view the tracks and found they were not those of a lion, but of a hyena.

The two hyenas were sighted at 2am on Wednesday when a trap was set for the 'lion'.
