A hijacker hit and killed a street cleaner when he lost control of a stolen car during a high-speed chase in Bedfordview, East Rand, on Wednesday, said Ekurhuleni metro police.

Inspector Kobeli Mokheseng said the 21-year-old man stole a silver Honda on Wednesday morning.

"Metro police officers, who were busy with law enforcement on the side of the road, saw the vehicle approaching at a high speed at about 9am. They attempted to stop the driver," he said. A high speed chase ensued.

Mokheseng said the hijacker lost control of the vehicle and it hit a 33-year-old old street cleaner employed by the local municipality. She died at the scene.

The man was arrested and would soon appear in the Germiston Magistrate's Court, said Mokheseng. Bedfordview police were investigating.
