Five women believed to be from Thailand were arrested during a raid on a suspected brothel in Morningside, Durban, the Mercury reported on Wednesday.

The owner of the house on Second Avenue was suspected to be part of a human trafficking syndicate and police were searching for him.

A police source told the Mercury the women were in the country illegally.

Police spokesman Colonel Jay Naicker declined to comment.

“This is a sensitive matter due to the nature of the alleged offences and the uncertainty regarding the activities of the arrested persons,” Naicker was quoted as saying.
