A new telephone number for residents to contact the City of Joburg would be launched on Friday, the municipality said.

"As a City we have a strategy to improve our customer service and the new, easy-to-remember contact telephone number is part of the plan," spokesman Kgamanyane Maphologela said in a statement.

The number 0860 JOBURG can be dialled from any landline or public phone.

Smartphones and BlackBerry devices with QWERTY keypads would require callers to enter the number 0860 562874, because these did not support the "dial" or "letter" function on their keypads.

"The number will bring relief on the part of the residents, as queries and comments can be communicated to the municipality effectively and accurately, and improve service delivery," Maphologela said.

On the number, residents could request information about the city, general queries, accounts queries and report service interruptions.
