June 16 marks Youth Day, a commemoration of the valour of Soweto’s youth in 1976 that marched against an inferior education.
This year we will be joining a recreated 1976 march from Morris Isaacson High School past many other schools to the scene of the first shooting outside Hector Peterson Museum.
The public, especially in Soweto, are invited to come and be part of this day, as special guests and delegates will participate in this march with poetry, speeches and entertainment to honour all the young people who lost their lives in the struggle against apartheid and Bantu education.
The walk will give participants an opportunity to retrace the steps of those heroes who resuscitated the fight for democracy and give today's youth an opportunity to experience what their predecessors went through.
The second such walk organised by Metro FM, it is expected to draw over 8 000 participants, of whom many hundreds will have the opportunity to follow up their walk with some meaningful work of beautifying some of those schools along the route of the March.
Cheesekids is a long-time partner to the Department of Basic Education in its beautification campaigns, whereby schools are refurbished, maintained and beautified to give scholars a better environment in which to learn.
All volunteers will be provided with tees and materials as well as basic instructions on what to do to beautify the school that they will be at.
The idea is to turn march action into further constructive action that leaves a tangible difference.
This event will also be the launch of the Nelson Mandela Day Revolution.
