Pregnancies recorded at KwaZulu-Natal schools last year are expected to top 13,000, once the figures have been compiled.
According to the Daily News newspaper, the provincial education department's social enrichment manager Gugu Madladla said that the year before (2010), a total of 12,971 pupils had fallen pregnant.
Education officials expected the 2011 would be higher, once all the figures were collated.
The newspaper quoted education MEC Senzo Mchunu as saying the department was already aware of 465 schoolgirl pregnancies this year.
