A Mpumalanga teacher who allegedly beat a pupil to death has been fired by the province's education department, according to a report on Tuesday.

The Sowetan newspaper quotes education MEC Reginah Mhlaule as saying: "This simply means that this teacher will at no stage be employed in public service to work with children."

The department had told the district director in Ehlanzeni, near White River, to terminate the teacher's contract.

The teacher was suspended on June 15 and resigned on June 18, according to the newspaper.

Mhlaule said the teacher was fired in accordance with the Employment of Educators Act, where a teacher who resigned while suspended was deemed to have been discharged due to misconduct.

The pupil was allegedly beaten with a broomstick on June 4 after missing school on June 1. He died of his injuries on June 8.

The teacher was arrested and appeared in court, said Lt-Col Leonard Hlati.

Police were still investigating.
