Abused husbands protest in Hillbrow

Dozens of men have taken to the streets of Hillbrow, Johannesburg, to seek protection from their abusive wives, who regularly beat them up, according to a report.

"We have a database of men who have been abused from all social classes, including pastors, men from informal settlements and medium-to-low density suburbs," Moshate Men's Right Organisation spokesman CEO Nashilo Mnisi told The New Age.

The men marched under the organisation's banner at the weekend.

Mnisi said women were increasingly becoming more abusive towards men.

Research showed that "some situations had boiled over and men killed their families because their wives had been abusing them for a very long time", he said.

Hillbrow police spokesman Constable Nkosinathi Mgimeti told The New Age that the march was joined by children who had seen their mothers abusing their fathers, and by woman whose brothers were being abused by their wives.

"There are very few men who come forward to the police to report these, but we do have victims of men abuse."

During the march from Hillbrow to Berea, protesters chanted: "If we start fighting abuse against men, we are putting a stop to all forms of human abuses. Say no to men abuse."
