ANC national executive committee member Tony Yengeni was stopped for driving his Maserati in Cape Town without a number plate and a valid licence disc.
Spokeswoman Maxine Jordaan said Yengeni was pulled over by traffic officers in the city centre around 4pm on Monday.
"The officers spotted a Maserati with no front number plates. On stopping the vehicle... they also saw the licence disc was not displayed."
She said Yengeni showed officers the number plate that was being stored in the car. He was instructed to display it immediately.
Deputy traffic services chief Andre Nel said Yengeni told officers the number plate had fallen off.
He was fined R500 for not displaying a valid licence disc, but received a R300 alternative fine when he showed the updated disc.
Safety and security mayoral committee member JP Smith said the car was stopped near the Waterfront, on the corner of Buitengracht street and Coen Steytler Avenue
