All northbound lanes of the M1 near the Woodmead off-ramp were closed on Monday after a man was killed and 18 others injured in an accident, Gauteng paramedics said.
ER24 spokesman Derrick Banks said a taxi and car collided just after 6am.
"All the lanes had been closed for the helicopter to land on the highway. It is believed the taxi veered off the highway and down an embankment after the collision with the car."
One man was declared dead on the scene. Another person had to be airlifted to a nearby hospital.
"The other 17 injured who sustained various injuries were transported to nearby hospitals for further treatment."
