Former Rustenburg mayor Matthew Wolmarans was jailed for 20 years on Tuesday for the murder of whistle-blower councillor Moss Phakoe.

The Rustenburg High Court sentenced his former bodyguard Enoch Mtshaba to life in prison.

Handing down sentence, Judge Ronnie Hendricks said the two did not show remorse.

"Accused no. 1 (Mtshaba), regarding your personal circumstances they are no reason for this court not to hand down the prescribed minimum sentence," said Hendricks.

"Accused no. 2 (Wolmarans) your personal circumstances differ. Your wife was diagnosed with cancer and you have two children aged 10 and 13 that depend on you, and also you support your extended family," he said.

Outside court, supporters of Wolmarans ran down the street in front of the court in protest after finding out about the sentence.

Public order police quickly stopped them when they ran in the direction of the municipal offices.
